The main characteristic of this approach is that it starts from the general and moves up to the specific detail. In a case of database modelling, top-down approach starts from the overall model. Once a model is created, the data is organised within this model. The focus is being put on the high level constructs, for example identification of entities, entity types and relationships between them.
